Protecting children together with Childhood in Brazil

Stora Enso was represented in the seminar by Kirsi Seppäläinen, Head of Communications and Sustainability, Biomaterials

In 2012 Stora Enso concluded an agreement with the Brazilian NGO Childhood aiming to combat child abuse and exploitation. The cooperation will last for three years.

On 26 March 2013, Stora Enso, Childhood Brazil , Veracel and Institute Tribos Jovens (local ONG in Bahia) organised the first seminar of the project “Protection Network in the extreme south of Bahia – Advances and challenges in fighting sexual violence against children and teens”.

The seminar, which was attended by almost 200 persons, represented the first public activity of this project that aims to strengthen the safety net for children and teens from the cities Eunápolis, Porto Seguro and Santa Cruz Cabrália in southern Bahia. Problems related to tourism significantly affect Porto Seguro and Santa Cruz Cabralia, while problems in Eunapolis are more related to poverty and vulnerability. According to research of the Brazilian Forum of Public Safety , two of these cities are among the five counties in which young people are more exposed to violence in Brazil, and there was a clear consensus among the audience of the importance of this type of work in the area.
